In a major recognition of academic leadership and scientific excellence, Prof. M. Ram Mohan, faculty at the Centre for Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Hyderabad (UoH), has been appointed as the Director of the prestigious Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehradun.
An autonomous R&D institution under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, WIHG was established in 1968 to advance basic research on the orogeny of the Himalayas, seismogenesis, geodynamic processes, and complex climate–tectonic interactions.
Distinguished Career in Geosciences
A internationally recognized specialist in petrology and geochemistry, Prof. Ram Mohan has contributed extensively to deciphering the crustal evolutionary history of the Indian Shield. His research seamlessly integrates field geology, petrological insights, and geochemical analysis to understand how continental crust forms and evolves through time.
His exceptional contributions to Earth sciences have earned him numerous prestigious honours, including:
• Fellowship: National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI, Allahabad)
• National Recognition: National Geoscience Award
• Prestigious Medals: H. H. Read Memorial Gold Medal, Bellur Rama Rao Birth Centenary Award, and the Krishnan Gold Medal
In his new role as Director, Prof. Ram Mohan will provide strategic and scientific leadership to WIHG, guiding high-impact research programs on Himalayan geology, natural geohazards, and Earth system processes. He will also focus on building national and international research collaborations across academic and scientific institutions.
