Hyderabad, March 9: The Association for Scientific Pursuits for Innovative Research Enterprises (ASPIRE), the innovation and entrepreneurship platform of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), celebrated its 8th Foundation Day recently at the School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad. The event brought together startup founders, researchers, mentors, and ecosystem partners to reflect on the growing impact of science-based entrepreneurship.

Welcoming the gathering, Prof. Anuradha, Officiating Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad, highlighted ASPIRE’s role in fostering innovation and nurturing a vibrant science startup ecosystem within the University.

Dr. Ramakrishna, CEO of ASPIRE TBI, presented an overview of ASPIRE’s progress and achievements over the past eight years, emphasizing its role in supporting science-driven startups, facilitating technology translation, and building collaborations between academia, industry, and investors.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Chandrasekhar Nair, Founder of BIGTEC Labs and Chief Guest of the event, spoke on “Lessons from Translating Innovation into Global Health Impact – My Entrepreneurial Journey.” Sharing insights from his entrepreneurial experience, he emphasized the importance of persistence, strong innovation ecosystems, and access to resources in translating scientific discoveries into impactful healthcare solutions. He also underscored the need for greater funding support for startups working on breakthrough technologies, particularly in deep-science sectors where innovation cycles are longer and require sustained investment.

The Guest of Honor, Prof. Ullas Kolthur-Seetharam, Director of the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) and National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), delivered a talk titled “Fostering Scientific Entrepreneurship & Translation: Building Ecosystems.” He emphasized the importance of strong institutional partnerships and supportive ecosystems to accelerate the translation of scientific research into viable technologies and enterprises.

During the event, winners of the ASPIRE Pre-Incubation Program were announced by Prof. S. Rajagopal, Director of ASPIRE-BioNEST. The program, supported through a CSR grant from Aurobindo Pharma, aims to encourage early-stage innovators and student entrepreneurs to develop promising ideas into startup ventures. The selected teams were felicitated and presented certificates by the distinguished guests.

Over the past eight years, ASPIRE has supported more than 150 startups, leading to the creation of over 1,100 jobs and 800 internship opportunities. The ecosystem has also contributed to over 110 patents and more than 25 products, reflecting its growing impact in translating scientific research into real-world technologies and enterprises.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Premkiran, Coordinator and Director of ASPIRE TIDE, who expressed gratitude to the guests, speakers, startup founders, partners, and participants for their continued support in strengthening the innovation ecosystem at the University of Hyderabad.
