Two 5th year  students from the Integrated Master of Optometry (I.M. Optometry) programme, School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad, Ms. Puttamraju Sai Sumana and Mr. Patil Abhishek, presented their research work at the 24th Dr. E. Vaithilingam Memorial Optometry Scientific Session, a national-level academic event  at Elite School of Optometry-Sankara Netralaya, Chennai that brings  together researchers, clinicians, and students in the field of optometry and vision science. The students presented their work in the Scientific Session E-Poster category, showcasing research addressing important clinical and educational aspects of vision science.

Ms. Puttamraju Sai Sumana (21ISMO20) presented research titled “Lipid Control for Vision Protection: Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs in Diabetic Retinopathy.” The study explored the potential role of lipid-lowering therapy in slowing the progression of diabetic retinopathy and improving retinal vascular health in patients with diabetes.


Mr. Patil Abhishek (21ISMO04) presented a study titled “Integrating Digital AV-Aids in Indian Universities: Inclusive Teaching for Students with Color Vision Deficiency and Low Vision,” which examined awareness and the use of accessible audiovisual teaching methods in higher education institutions.

The study highlighted the importance of inclusive educational strategies for students with visual impairments.

Both research projects were conducted under the supervision of Dr. Shiva Ram Male, Assistant Professor and course coordinator for I.M. Optometry programme at School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad, congratulated the students for their successful presentations at a national scientific platform and encouraged them to continue engaging in research activities that contribute to evidence-based clinical practice.

Prof. R. K. Mishra, Dean, School of Medical Sciences, appreciated the students for their active participation and commended their efforts in presenting research at a national conference at Masters level. He noted that such academic exposure strengthens the research culture within the optometry programme and motivates students to integrate scientific inquiry with clinical training and it reflects the University of Hyderabad’s commitment to fostering research-oriented training and academic excellence in Optometry and Vision science education.
