Well-known bhakti and sufi singer from Delhi Ms. Vidya Rao mesmerized the audience at a concert organised by the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on 27 November 2013. The concert titled Beyond Boundaries – Sufi and Bhakti Music was organised by the School of Social Sciences and UoH under the campus concert series.

Ms. Vidya started the concert with Amir Khusrau’s ‘teri surat ki balihari‘ in raga kafi Deepchandi tala. This was followed by a poem of Kabir ‘jo khuda masjid basat hai‘ in raga bhairavi tala kharwa. The audience were spell-bound when she sang the poem of Meera Bai ‘mha giridhar rang rachi‘ in raga yaman tala kaharwa. Another poem of Meera Bai ‘mano chakar rakho ji‘ in raga maand tala kaharwa was just melodious. Jo hale miski a poem by Amir Khusrau in raga gara tala kaharwa was another hit with the listeners.

Milad ki rathiyan a paidaishi traditional sung in raga mishra tilak kamoo tala dadra was one of her best which was followed by a poem of Mahalagha Chanda ‘hai kahan gaeron ko teri‘ in raga bhairavi tala rupak.

Ms. Vidya Rao was accompanied on the tabla by Mr. Prakash Kumar Thakur and on the Harmonium by Mr. Vinay Mishra.

Many guests from the city attended the concert along with students, faculty and staff of the University.

 

Later Prof. Ramakrishna Ramaswamy, VC, UoH felicitated the artists.
