As part of the Earth Day 2025 celebrations, the Centre for Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS), University of Hyderabad (UoH) organized impactful events on 22.04.2025 to raise awareness of environmental sustainability and climate action, particularly among the student community.
CEOAS hosted an invited lecture by Shri G. Srinivasa Rao, Deputy Director, Earth & Climate Studies Area, NRSC/ISRO. The talk, titled “Understanding our Earth: The Geo-spatial way,” offered a deep dive into the role of satellite-based observations in environmental monitoring and climate research.

Shri Rao underscored the significance of Earth Day in the global context of climate change and reiterated India’s climate commitments — including a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (relative to 2005 levels) by 2030, achieving 50% renewable energy usage, and targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
Highlighting NRSC’s pivotal role in supporting these goals, Shri Rao introduced participants to key platforms like NICES, which delivers Essential Climate Variables (ECVs), and VEDAS, which supports a range of geospatial applications across sectors. He also discussed existing and upcoming satellite missions critical for understanding and managing Earth’s dynamic systems. The session witnessed active participation from students across various streams.
