The department of Political science organised the lecture “World Order in Flux: A View from Europe” in the Seminar Hall, Department of Political Science, School of Social Sciences, University of Hyderabad (UoH) on April 17, 2025 by Professor Dr. Cord Jackpbeit, Professor of Political Science and the Vice Dean for Research position at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Hamburg. Dr. S. Shaji, Department of Political Science, chaired the session and introduced the guest.

In his lecture, Professor Jakobeit underscored the necessity of employing concepts with precision to develop a relational understanding of the prevailing world order. He traced the historical evolution of world orders to the contemporary context and explored four distinct frameworks: Chinese, Islamic, European, and American.

Additionally, he examined the issues in the claims of universality associated with each framework. Professor Jakobeit also addressed the escalating demands for military expenditure, mobilisation, economic challenges, and the importance of consensus-building among the European Union member states.

As a distinguished expert in international relations, he analysed the foreign and economic policies of the United States, China, and other European countries. He posited that Europe’s current emphasis lies in enhancing economic production and equipping the next generation with essential skills to meet new challenges.

The audience actively participated in a stimulating discussion, posing insightful inquiries encompassing transnational norms in network building, the implications of German feminist foreign policy, Germany’s strategic autonomy, and the tensions between Europe and neo-populist politics.

Professor Jakobeit addressed these inquiries with pragmatic depth. Dr. S Shaji appreciated Professor Jakobeit’s comprehensive exploration of the theoretical and practical dimensions of the world order and shared reflections regarding the lecture.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Professor K.Y. Ratnam, who emphasised the future collaborations and opportunities between the Department of Political Science and the University of Hamburg.

Professors Anju Helen Bara, Bhim Bahadur Subba, Sneha Banerjee, Anagha Ingole, and students from the department and the College of Integrated Studies attended the lecture. It was truly an engaging and informative experience for all.
