The Indira Gandhi Memorial Library (IGM Library), University of Hyderabad (UoH) in collaboration with Indian Library Association (ILA), New Delhi jointly organized Librarian’s Day celebrations on August 12, 2022 at IGM conference Hall, UoH Hyderabad. The IGM Library also organized Book Exhibition “Freedom Movement and Independence India” at Library lounge for the exclusive collection of books on the said theme were displayed for faculty, research scholars and all the students of UoH. The occasion was graced in the presence of Prof. B.J. Rao, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad, Dr. N. Varadarajan, University Librarian and Dr. O. Sivasankar Prasad, Deputy Librarian & Public Relations Officer, ILA were accompanied with all library staff of University.

The programme began with the traditional lightening of the lamps with floral tribute and garland to the portrait of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, Father of Library Science in India. All staff of IGM Library paid homage and tribute to illustrious Guru Dr. S.R Ranganathan on this auspicious occasion.

The National Librarians Day is observed on 12th of August every year to honor the birth anniversary of Padmashri Dr S. R. Ranganathan (1892-1972), who is considered as father of library science in India. Dr. Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan dedicated his entire life to library profession in India leaving a rich legacy.

The Library has also displayed banners, posters and flags at the entry gate and different parts of library and stack area as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations and Har Ghar Tiranga. The collection of books consists of various topics in different languages like English, Hindi, Telugu, and Urdu. The collection includes nationalism, patriotism, national leaders and freedom fighters, and national movements.

The purpose of the display was to bring awareness to students about the importance of the freedom struggle of Independent India. Some of the faculty and students of UoH visited the book exhibition organized by IGML. They went through the displayed books and expressed their happiness and appreciated the IGML for the organizing a useful event. They were delighted to see the informative books on India’s independence movement displayed as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The students suggested to enhance the collection so that it will be useful for them to prepare for the competitive exams in their careers also.  Many students appreciated the efforts made by the Library and took selfie with the displayed books.
