Sh. Nagaraju Maddirala, IAS (TR: 1993), Alumnus of University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been appointed as Secretary, Dept. of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India. He completed MA in Philosophy from the UoH during 1988-90. He also served as President of the UoH Students’ Union during his stay at the University. In 2019, Sh Nagaraju delivered a lecture on Economic Reforms of the 1990s as part of the Alumni Speaker Series at UoH.
Sh. Nagaraju has been the Additional Secretary under the Government of India’s Ministry of Coal since November 2020. He had been a Joint Secretary to the Ministry for nearly nine month before this. During his tenure in the Coal Ministry he had led opening up of the sector through private commercial mining by auctioning more than 115 coal mines transparently and responsible for reforms that has led India reach one billion ton coal production this year.
Over the course of the service, he served at state, national and international level in the areas of public order, revenue & development administration, tribal development, finance, international economic relations, Industries and commerce, healthcare and State finances.
In the State Government of Tripura, he served as District Magistrate, Director, Tribal Welfare, Secretary /Principal Secretary of Health, Women and Child Development, Finance and Industries & Commerce and other departments. During his tenure, Tripura was recognized in several fronts for its achievements in governance. (1) “Most Improved Small State in E Governance” by India Today 2016. (2) 2nd prize by the Govt of India for reducing Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) from 26 to 21 in 2016 and (3) The best State in North East for “Ease of Doing Business” in 2016 by Govt. of India.
During 2004-08, he served in the Ministry of Finance, Department of Economic Affairs as Director in Japan/North America and in the World Bank Divisions. Thereafter, he worked as Advisor to the Executive Director at the World Bank in Washington DC from 2008 to 2012.
He completed Executive Education at Harvard University on Trade Negotiations in 2005. He was a visiting fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, USA for one year in 2012-13, Center for Advanced Study of India, and Visiting Research Scholar in Stonehill College in 2018-19.
