It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that we mourn the passing of Prof. Probal Dasgupta, a visionary scholar, an inspiring leader, and a cherished pillar of the University of Hyderabad community, on June 1, 2026.

Prof. Dasgupta’s contributions spanned continents and cultures. As a world-renowned linguist, a pioneer in translation studies, and a global torchbearer for the Esperanto community, his intellectual footprint was truly international. Yet, his impact was felt just as deeply right here at home, where his dedication to institution-building shaped the very fabric of our university.

During his impactful tenure as the Dean of the School of Humanities and the Director of the Study in India Program, Prof. Dasgupta was defined by his out-of-the-box thinking and courageous leadership. He was never afraid to challenge conventions, taking bold decisions that introduced fresh, exciting practices and elevated the university’s academic standing.

He did not just administer; he imagined. His bold decisions and innovative practices breathed new life into our academic programs, leaving a lasting blueprint for the future.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless students whose lives and minds he transformed. The academic world has lost a brilliant mind, and the University of Hyderabad has lost one of its truest champions.

While we grieve this monumental loss, we also celebrate a life lived with immense purpose, intellect, and courage. His legacy will continue to inspire our community for generations to come.

May his soul rest in peace.
