The Department of Education and Education Technology at the University of Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR), New Delhi, organized a special talk on “Indian Philosophy and Its Contemporary Relevance” as part of the Indian Philosopher’s Day 2024 celebrations. The event was chaired by Dr. Ravula Krishnaiah and featured an enlightening talk by Dr. C.D. Sebastian, Professor at IIT Bombay.

The event commenced with an introduction and a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, marking an auspicious beginning to the program. Professor Laxminarayan Lenka, Head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Hyderabad, spoke about the essence and significance of philosophy, setting the tone for the evening by emphasizing its foundational aspects.

Dr. Ravula Krishnaiah, the program organizer from the Department of Education and Educational Technology, warmly welcomed the keynote speaker, highlighting Dr. Sebastian’s contributions to philosophy.

 

Dr. C.D. Sebastian’s talk comprehensively analyzed how ancient Indian philosophical thoughts continue to impact modern life and intellectual discourse. He began with the assertion, “An unexamined life is not worth living,” and classified Indian philosophy into “Angrichwi” or “Darshans.” He discussed orthodox and heterodox schools of philosophy and delved into the six schools of Vedanta. Dr Sebastian also explained philosophical scepticism, meaning “suspension of judgment,” and detailed the seven relevance’s of philosophy according to Buddha’s disciple Anand.

His engaging presentation was met with great appreciation from the audience, which included various professors, scholars, and students from different departments, reflecting the interdisciplinary interest in philosophical discussions.

The event also had a vibrant international dimension with the presence of a special guest, Associate Professor James Lopez from Spain, making the audience feel connected to a global community of philosophical discourse.
