Indian National Science Academy (INSA), the premier science academy of India, has selected Prof. Appa Rao Podile, former Vice-Chancellor of University of Hyderabad, for the prestigious INSA Senior Scientist position for an initial period of three years. Under this programme, Prof. Podile will be affiliated with the School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad, where he will continue his contributions to advanced research, mentoring, and institutional development.

Prof. Podile is an eminent microbiologist and plant biotechnologist with over four decades of distinguished academic and research experience. He is widely recognized for his pioneering work in plant–microbe interactions, biological control of plant diseases, and sustainable agriculture. His research has significantly contributed to understanding rhizosphere biology and the development of eco-friendly microbial technologies for crop improvement. Over the years, he has guided 28 doctoral and 12 postdoctoral scholars, published extensively in high-impact journals, and contributed to national and international scientific collaborations.

As Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad, Prof. Podile played a transformative role in strengthening academic programmes, fostering interdisciplinary research, and enhancing the university’s national and global standing. His leadership emphasized innovation, research excellence, and capacity building—particularly in emerging areas of life sciences and biotechnology.

The INSA Senior Scientist Programme is a flagship initiative of the Indian National Science Academy aimed at utilizing the expertise of distinguished senior scientists after their formal retirement. The programme enables accomplished researchers to remain scientifically active by affiliating them with universities and research institutions across the country, particularly those that can benefit from experienced mentorship and high-quality research guidance. Selected scientists are expected to pursue independent or collaborative research, mentor young faculty and students, and contribute to strengthening research ecosystems.

Through this programme, INSA seeks to bridge generational gaps in academia, promote excellence in research, and support capacity building in institutions that aspire to enhance their scientific output. The initiative reflects INSA’s broader mandate to promote science in India and to ensure that valuable intellectual capital continues to contribute to national development.

Prof. Podile’s association with the School of Life Sciences at the University of Hyderabad is expected to further enrich its vibrant research environment. His ongoing work will focus on advancing sustainable agricultural practices through microbial interventions, improving soil health, and developing innovative strategies for crop resilience under changing climatic conditions. His presence is also expected to inspire young researchers and strengthen collaborative research initiatives within and beyond the university.

This recognition by INSA underscores Prof. Podile’s sustained contributions to science and his continued commitment to advancing research and mentorship in India.
