As part of the University of Hyderabad’s (UoH) 50th year celebrations, the campus hosted an exceptional ceremony honoring Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, former Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization (WHO), with the prestigious Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) Lifetime Achievement Award. The event marked a significant highlight in the series of UoH Golden Jubilee Distinguished lecture series- part of university’s year-long golden jubilee commemorations.
Prof. B.J. Rao, Vice Chancellor of UoH, opened the ceremony by connecting the university’s 50-year legacy of excellence in research with Dr. Swaminathan’s remarkable achievements. “As we celebrate our institution’s 50th year, it is particularly fitting that we honor Dr. Swaminathan, whose career embodies the kind of impactful research and global leadership that UoH has always strived to inspire,” remarked Prof. Rao. Prof. Pallu Reddanna, Executive President of FABA, emphasized how this award ceremony aligns perfectly with the university’s anniversary theme of celebrating excellence in research and innovation.
Dr. Swaminathan, who currently serves as the Principal Adviser for the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme at India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, delivered a thought-provoking lecture titled “Journey of TB and COVID: Lessons for Future Challenges.” Her presentation resonated deeply with the university’s commitment to cutting-edge research and global health solutions. Her lecture highlighted the importance of translational research and the crucial role of academic institutions in addressing global health challenges, drawing from her extensive experience with TB research and COVID-19 management.
The Golden Jubilee Distinguished lecture sparked engaging discussions among students and faculty, particularly resonating with the university’s ongoing research initiatives in biotechnology and public health. Dr. Swaminathan’s insights into managing global health crises drew particular interest from young researchers present at the event.
This event symbolized the institution’s commitment to global health research and its continuous pursuit of academic excellence. The award ceremony and lecture series continue to be significant markers in the university’s year-long anniversary celebrations, highlighting its role in shaping future health leaders and researchers.
