DRDO Industry Academia – Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE), University of Hyderabad, successfully organised a one-day hands-on offline training program on COMSOL Multiphysics on 7 May 2026 at the Seminar Hall of DIA-CoE, in association with COMSOL Multiphysics Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru.

The training program was designed to provide participants with an introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics software along with practical hands-on experience in simulation-based research and modelling. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from Master’s students, Ph.D. scholars, project staff, faculty members, staff of DIA-CoE, and members of TIDE Startups (Incubation Centre). Around 40 delegates attended the program.
In his introductory talk, Prof. P. Prem Kiran, School of Physics emphasized the importance of numerical simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics in laser ablation studies, laser shock peening, shadowgraphy, and other DRDO-sponsored research activities.

The workshop was divided into two technical sessions aligned with the thrust research areas of DIA-CoE. The morning session was dedicated to the application of COMSOL Multiphysics in chemical engineering, covering demonstrations on fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and chemical reaction simulations along with various industrial and research-oriented applications.
The second session was on “Introduction to Modelling Ray and Wave Optics Applications Using COMSOL Multiphysics,” where participants were introduced to simulation methodologies for geometrical and wave optics systems, including ray tracing, interference, diffraction, and polarization studies. Advanced applications such as optical device modelling, laser cavity ray tracing, scattering studies of gold nanoparticles, and optical propagation through atmospheric conditions were also demonstrated.

The technical sessions were conducted by four experts from COMSOL Multiphysics. Participants were also provided with training modules and learning resources for further practice and self-learning.
The Director of the Centre, Dr. S. C. Bhattacharyya expressed satisfaction with the active engagement of the participants throughout the program. He also stated that similar focused training programs for emerging research and industrial applications would be organized in the future at DIA-CoE, University of Hyderabad.

The workshop concluded with an interactive discussion session and a group photograph of the participants and organizing team.
