About PLOS
Leading a Transformation in Science Communication
The idea for PLOS (Public Library of Science) began in 2000 with an online petition initiative by Nobel Prize winner Harold Varmus, formerly director of the National Institutes of Health . Nearly 34,000 scientists from 180 countries signed. Recognizing that most existing journals were resistant to changing their business practices, in 2003 PLOS launched a first fully Open Access journal in order to empower researchers to make science immediately and publicly available online, without restrictions.
The Editors of PLOS are ambassadors who are empowered to use their expertise to spread awareness of our mission and values in the global research community, forge inclusive relationships, guide and encourage a diverse group of prospective and current contributors, reflect community needs, and increase goodwill for science in the society.
PLOS ONE is one of the domains which is an inclusive journal community working together to advance science for the benefit of society, now and in the future. Founded with the aim of accelerating the pace of scientific advancement and demonstrating its value, we believe all rigorous science deserves to be published and should be discoverable, widely disseminated and freely accessible to all.
