The Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been ranked once again as the top-ranked public university department of communication and journalism in the country in the 2017 Outlook Magazine rankings. Overall, the department is ranked all-India No. 4 in a field that is increasingly dominated by private institutions, many of which are run and supported by the industry.

“I am happy that the Communication department is consistently being ranked among the best in the country and all credit goes to the students, researchers and faculty members”, says Prof. Appa Rao Podile, Vice Chancellor reacting to the rankings.
It is a matter of pride, especially, that the department has been ranked No. 1 in “academic excellence”, says Prof. Kanchan K Malik, Head of the Communication department at UoH. In fact, the department, offering Master’s and Doctoral programmes in Communication for over 25 years, is the only public institution listed in the top 10 apart from Jamia’s MCRC, which is a research centre, she adds.
This ranking as country’s top University department of communication and journalism has now become a consistent feature for the Department of Communication for some years. The credit goes to all the students, both MA and PhD, the alumni, all the faculty members, and a supportive University administration. Even within the limits of fee structure and resources, the department exercises a collective commitment to ethical and good practices related to admissions as well as quality of curriculum and teaching.
The larger institutional ambience of academic autonomy and a relative degree of flexibility enjoyed by the faculty have provided the necessary framework from which the department operates. The department is equipped with state of the art audio and video studios, computer lab, and desk-top publishing as well as research software. With national and international recognition for many of its faculty members, the department attracts students from across the country and a few from abroad. The alumni of the department have gone on to work in various media organizations and also taken up academic positions in India and abroad.
