Mr. Rajesh Koalla, a Ph.D. research scholar under the guidance of Prof. Anil Kumar Chaudhary at DIA-CoE (formerly ACRHEM), School of Physics, University of Hyderabad, presented a paper titled “Application of Terahertz Metamaterials for Low-Concentration Sensing of Premium Explosives such as RDX and TNT” at the “SPIE EUROPE PHOTONICS-2024 / Terahertz Photonics – III” conference, held from April 7th– 11th, April,2024, at Strasbourg, France. The ICube Laboratory in Strasbourg, France, hosted the conference. Furthermore, the paper will be published in the international SPIE Conference Digital Proceedings.

In this paper, we demonstrated the role of terahertz metamaterial-based sensors which can be applied to detect or sense low concentrations (milli molar level) of high-energy materials like RDX and TNT. The investigation findings could be utilized to detect and identify traces of high-energy materials in crime scene, Warfield and over suspicious bags during security screenings.

The conference offered Rajesh Koalla the chance to engage with renowned experts and researchers around the globe who are specialize in Terahertz Spectroscopy, Terahertz generation and detection, and Terahertz photonics.

Rajesh says, “As a Ph.D. scholar, I was privileged to have an outstanding opportunity to interact and participate in discussions with distinguished scientists from around the globe. This invaluable experience is sure to enrich my research career. Engaging with eminent scholars on an international scale has broadened my understanding of cutting-edge research in the terahertz field. I am confident that the knowledge gained from these interactions will greatly contribute to advancing my academic pursuits and future endeavours.”

He sincerely acknowledges the Institution of Eminence (IoE), University of Hyderabad, for supporting him with a travel grant to attend the conference. He also thanks DRDO, Ministry of Defense, Government of India, through ACRHEM, for instrumental facility and financial support.
